the man
Jack Lemmon was born in Boston in 1925 to an advantaged family. As a boy, he suffered from bad health and it wasn’t until discovering a passion for sport and acting at school that he put this aside and came into his own. After a not entirely glorious spell at Harvard, the young Lemmon arrived in New York with a fierce ambition both for the stage and for music) to be the next Gershwin). Through a combination of hard work and dedication he forged a career first in TV and then arrived in Hollywood for his first film appearance in 1954.
Over the next 46 years he was to make almost 70 films, win Best Actor and best Supporting Actor Oscars alongside a range of film and TV Awards. More importantly however, he was to earn the respect of his peers and of audiences alike.
Early Studio biographies described him as a man ‘that you are going to like’ and they were bang on.
